Robert Dalton Harris and Diane DeBlois are editors of the Postal History Journal. Their presentation will showcase a detailed analysis of four special post office situations. North Bergen, NY (1828 to 1834) offers a profile of an office that responded to local need. Shrewsbury, VT (1849 to 1859) was made redundant by the railway’s passing just enough beyond its borders to make its continuance impracticable, while its profile includes the impact of postage stamps and mandatory pre-payment of postage. Several communities in Westchester County, NY (1850-1851) shed light on the political ramifications of the special provisions. Madera and Hegarty’s Cross Roads, PA reveal the impact of commercial interests ‘hopscotching’ with the railroads 1850s and onward.
