Special Screening of The Stamp Thief at GASS 2025

The American Philatelic Society is proud to announce a special screening of the 2025 documentary The Stamp Thief at Great American Stamp Show this August.

The Stamp Thief is the passion project of director Dan Sturman and producer Gary Gilbert. The film reveals a crime of pure greed committed by a Nazi officer, but largely forgotten amidst the atrocities of the Holocaust; the officer, tasked with cataloging valuables stolen from the Jews who were sent to concentration camps, instead stole millions of dollars’ worth of rare stamps and buried them. Gary Gilbert, a stamp collector (and former APS member), investigates the mystery in a film described as “part detective story, part heist film, and part historical reckoning … an engrossing cat-and-mouse journey.”

The Stamp Thief will make its philatelic debut on Friday, August 15, at the AMC Streets of Woodfield 20 in Schaumburg, Illinois. After the film, producer Gary Gilbert will host a question and answer session, and we will also welcome a local Holocaust survivor to speak to the audience.

The APS thanks Danny Spungen and the Florence and Laurence Spungen Family Foundation and the Polonus Polish Philatelic Society for their sponsorship of this event, as well as Dan Sturman and Gary Gilbert for making this screening a reality.
