National Library Week 2023: “There’s More to the Story”
This week (April 23-29) is National Library Week (NLW) an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. In 1957 the National Book Committee, formed by the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publishers, developed a plan for an annual National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. Today the ALA carries on the tradition of NLW with 2023 marking the event’s 65th anniversary.

Here at the American Philatelic Research Library (APRL) this year’s NLW theme of “There’s More to the Story” has particular relevance, since the APRL, as many of you know, is not your typical library. From the specialized philatelic subject matter to the unique materials that make up its collection such auction catalogs, name sales, books and journals in many different languages, stamp albums, show programs and archival items that include postal uniforms, postal scales, pilot logs, post office records and so much more, the APRL has an incredible story to tell.
Throughout the week you’ll hear from each member of the library staff as we celebrate NLW by sharing what’s “more to the story” at the APRL.
