To celebrate it’s 100th anniversary, the Allentown Philatelic Society, in partnership with the Allentown School District Foundation and the Allentown Art Museum, will sponsor a city-wide art contest and exhibition open to all students in the Queen City’s school district in 2023.
Students will be asked to create a postage stamp design depicting animals of their choice. The subjects can be extinct, currently existing or fictitious creations. Why animals? Worldwide, they are the most often portrayed subjects on postage stamps.
More than $1,000 in cash awards and individual mementoes will be awarded to the contest winners in a ceremony to be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 3 at the art museum. The event is open to the general public.
The awards will be given to students finishing in first, second and third place in the district’s elementary, middle and high schools. First place winners will receive $200, second place $100 and third place $50. The nine awardees’ submissions and other selected art will be exhibited at the art museum through June 11 for the general public to view.
In addition, the winning entries will also be exhibited at the stamp club’s biannual Eastern Pennsylvania Stamp Show, being held on July 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schnecksville Fire Company, 4550 Packhouse Road, Schnecksville, PA 18078. The show is open to the general public. There is no admission fee and free parking.
The stamp club is one of the longest continually operating stamp clubs in the United States, being founded in Allentown on May 8, 1923.
