The Series of 1922 was produced during a period of rapid change within the Bureau of Engraving
and Printing. There is much to be learned about the designs, printing processes, perforation sizes
and varieties of these stamps.
Course Description: During the years 1921 to 1933 the Post Office issued a new and novel series of definitive stamps (the Fourth Bureau Issue), as well as innovative commemoratives and other stamps and postal stationery. Survey these stamps (and related postal history and ephemera) in the cultural, political, and technological context of their time. Meet some of the power brokers behind the stamps and the skilled workers who produced them. Follow the evolution of printing presses at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and experience the phenomenal growth of air mail service. Throw in a wee bit of scandal, an event of deep national mourning, and a glorious patriotic celebration, and we will have the ingredients to appreciate these fun stamps from a new and deeper perspective!
Intended Audience (who should attend): Anyone wishing to learn more about the stamps of the 1920s and the stories behind them.
Instructor Bio: Rod Juell is a member of numerous philatelic organizations including the APS and the United States Stamp Society, of which he is the Executive Secretary. He is a regular contributor to the United States Specialist and American Stamp Dealer & Collector. Rod is co-editor of the Encyclopedia of United States Stamps and Stamp Collecting, Second edition.
