In 1963, Henry Jehan was a high school student taking classes in physics when he learned of an experiment being run by the Department of the Post Office. They were printing stamps with a special ink that would glow under specific frequencies of ultraviolet light. He saw this as a perfect melding of his studies and his hobby, sparking his lifetime interest in the luminescent tagging of postage stamps from their very beginning. Friday,
Henry begins a three-part series on the topic of Luminescent Tagging:
Luminescent Tagging Part I - Experimental Years
Luminescent Tagging Part II - Technology Evolution
Luminescent Tagging Part III - Hidden Art
This program reviews the development of the tagging process, along with a survey of the tagged issues (both regular and airmail) that have appeared on U.S. first day covers. Illustrations include items photographed under ultraviolet light. Stamp Chat presenter Mr. Henry Jehan has been a stamp collector for 63 years. He began when he was 10 years old when his grandfather gave him a shoebox full of old US stamps he had accumulated in the early 1900s when working in the mailroom at Winchester Firearms. Over the years Henry's interests have expanded to include the stamps of Canada, Great Britain, British Europe, and British Oceania, but the heart of his stamp collecting interests has remained with his US collection.
